District of Columbia business name search

In DC, you search registered entities and trade names through BOSS (DC Business One Stop, formerly CorpOnline), run by DLCP's Corporations Division. BOSS works through Access DC, so you may need to create an account to sign in. Entity names need a proper suffix, and trade names must be distinguishable from entity names, reserved names and other trade names on record.

How to check if a name is available in District of Columbia

  1. 01

    Sign in to BOSS

Go to boss.dc.gov. DLCP says you'll be asked to create an Access DC account if you don't already have one.

  2. 02

    Search entities and trade names

Use the BOSS search to look up registered entities. Records show trade names and registered agents, so you can see whether your name is already in use as either an entity or a trade name.

  3. 03

    Pick the right suffix

DC entity names need a distinct suffix such as Inc, LLC, PLLC, LLP, LP or PC. A trade name can't be a person's true legal name, and it can't copy an active entity name or trade name.

  4. 04

    Check federal trademarks

A DC trade name is only valid in the District. Search tmsearch.uspto.gov if you'll operate in other states or online.

  5. 05

    Domain, handles and alternatives

Check the domain and social handles. If BOSS shows your name is taken, our free generator at /business-name-generator/ can help you find another.
