Wyoming business name search

Wyoming's Business Entity Search on WyoBiz lets you search by filing name (Starts With or Contains) or filing ID. When you file online, it's your job to check that no entity on record already uses the singular or plural form of your name. Adding even one different letter, numeral or word can make a name distinguishable.

How to check if a name is available in Wyoming

  1. 01

    Search WyoBiz with "Contains"

Go to wyobiz.wyo.gov/Business/FilingSearch.aspx and search the main words with "Contains." Click any result for its details and status.

  2. 02

    Check singular and plural

Search both forms of every key word (Ranch and Ranches, for example). Wyoming makes online filers responsible for spotting these matches.

  3. 03

    Make it distinct if needed

If "XYZ LLC" is active, "XYZ Inc." isn't available. Adding a numeral, a letter or a word, as in "XYZ 2 LLC" or "XYZ Ranch LLC," can fix it. Wyoming treats 3, III and Three as different from each other.

  4. 04

    Search trademarks

Wyoming won't accept a corporate name that is the same as or deceptively similar to a state-registered trademark. Also check federal marks at tmsearch.uspto.gov.

Wyoming business naming rules

  • A name is distinguishable if it has one or more different letters or numerals, or a different sequence of them, compared with names on record.
  • Entity words (corporation, company, incorporated, LLC, L.P., limited and similar), the words the, and or a, punctuation, special characters, capitalization, and singular versus plural don't make a name distinguishable.
  • Numerals, Roman numerals and number words are treated as different from each other, so XYZ 3, XYZ III and XYZ Three are all distinct.
  • A corporate name can't be the same as or deceptively similar to a trademark or service mark registered in Wyoming.

Reserving a name

Wyoming reserves an available corporate name for the applicant's exclusive use for 120 days, and the reservation can't be renewed. LLCs have their own reservation form. Check the current fee on the Secretary of State's site.

DBAs and trade names

Trade names are registered with the Wyoming Secretary of State, which keeps entities, trademarks and trade names together. Registered trade names count when the state checks whether a new entity name is available.
