What is Business Plan?

Definition

A business plan is a written document that describes what your business does, who it serves, how it will make money, and what resources it needs.

Why it matters

A plan forces you to test your thinking on paper. It does not need to be long; a lean version of 1 to 3 pages covering customers, offer, pricing, marketing, and finances is often enough for a small business.

Suppose you plan a mobile pet grooming business. Your plan notes startup costs of $9,500 for a van conversion and equipment, a price of $85 per groom, 12 grooms a week, and variable costs of $15 each. That gives about $3,600 a month in contribution, so you can estimate roughly 3 months to recover the startup cost after covering fixed expenses.

Banks, grant programs, and partners often ask for a plan, and updating it each year keeps it useful.

Common mistakes

  • !Writing a long document once and never revisiting it as you learn.
  • !Using overly optimistic sales assumptions with no evidence behind them.
