What is Invoice Net 30?
Definition
Invoice net 30 is a payment term meaning the customer has 30 days from the invoice date to pay the full amount.
Why it matters
Net terms are common in business-to-business work, and they effectively give your customer a short interest-free loan. Net 15, net 30, and net 60 are all used.
A web developer finishes a $4,000 project on June 1 and invoices with net 30 terms, so payment is due July 1. If she has $2,500 in expenses to pay in June, she must cover that from savings. Asking for 50 percent upfront, $2,000, and the rest on net 15 improves her cash position significantly.
Spell out the due date and any late fee on every invoice. Late fees must be agreed in advance, and allowable rates vary by state.
Common mistakes
- !Sending invoices late, which pushes back the entire payment timeline.
- !Offering net 60 or net 90 terms to small customers when you need cash quickly.
