What is Minimum Viable Product (MVP)?

Definition

A minimum viable product (MVP) is the simplest version of a product that real customers will pay for or use, built to test demand before you invest in the full thing.

Why it matters

An MVP exists to answer one question cheaply: does anyone want this? For a small business that often means a one-page website, a hand-made batch, or a service you deliver manually before building any systems around it.

Say you want to sell hot sauce. Instead of renting a commercial kitchen and ordering 5,000 bottles, you make 40 bottles at home-scale cost of about $3 each ($120 total), sell them at a farmers market for $9, and see how many sell out. If 35 sell, you have evidence. If 4 sell, you spent $120 to learn that instead of $15,000.

The goal is learning, not perfection. Ship the smallest thing that delivers the core promise, then improve it based on what buyers say and do.

Common mistakes

  • !Adding features and polish for months before showing the product to a single paying customer.
  • !Treating compliments from friends as proof of demand instead of asking for an actual purchase.
