What is Print on Demand?

Definition

Print on demand is a model in which products such as shirts, mugs, and posters are printed with your design only after a customer orders, and shipped by the print partner.

Why it matters

You create the designs, and the printing partner handles production, packaging, and shipping. This removes inventory risk, but each item costs more than bulk printing.

A hat design might cost $14 from the print partner and sell for $29, leaving $15 minus about $1.20 in marketplace fees, or $13.80 profit. If you sell 80 hats a month, that is roughly $1,100. Printing 200 hats yourself at $8 each would need $1,600 upfront and carry the risk of unsold stock.

Because margins per item are modest, success depends on strong designs, a defined audience, and efficient marketing. Order samples to check print quality before listing.

Common mistakes
