What every invoice should include
- Your business name, address and contact email (and your tax ID where your clients require it)
- The client's name and billing address
- A unique invoice number and the invoice date
- A due date or payment terms, such as Net 30
- An itemized list of products or services with quantities and prices
- Subtotal, any discount, sales tax if you collect it, and the total due
- How to pay you: bank transfer details, card link or check address
Invoice numbering that stays organized
Pick a format and never reuse a number. Simple sequential numbers (INV-001, INV-002) work for most small businesses; some owners add the year (2026-014) or a client code (ACME-007) so they can find invoices quickly. Consistent numbering also makes bookkeeping and tax time easier.
Getting paid faster
- Send the invoice the day the work is delivered, not at the end of the month.
- State the due date as a date, not just “Net 30”.
- Offer at least two ways to pay, including a card or online payment link.
- Send a friendly reminder a few days before the due date and again the day after.
- For larger projects, ask for a deposit up front and invoice in milestones.

What does Net 30 mean on an invoice?
Payment is due 30 days after the invoice date. Net 15 and Net 60 work the same way with different periods.
