What is Conversion Rate?
Definition
Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors or leads who complete a desired action, such as buying, booking a call, or signing up.
Conversion rate % = conversions ÷ total visitors × 100
Why it matters
Conversion rate tells you how well your page, offer, or pitch turns attention into results. Small gains here are worth more than extra traffic because they lift every visitor's value.
A photographer's website gets 2,000 visits a month and 30 visitors book a session, a 1.5 percent conversion rate. At $400 per session, that is $12,000. Improving the booking page and adding client reviews lifts conversion to 2.2 percent, producing 44 bookings, or $17,600, with no more traffic.
Define the conversion clearly for each step: email signup, inquiry, and purchase can all have separate rates. Typical e-commerce rates are often in the 1 to 4 percent range, but it varies widely.
Common mistakes
- !Spending more on ads before fixing a page that converts poorly.
- !Changing many things at once, making it impossible to know what helped.
