What is Positioning?
Definition
Positioning is the place your business occupies in customers' minds relative to competitors, built from what you emphasize and who you say you are for.
Why it matters
Customers compare you with alternatives within seconds. Positioning decides whether they see you as the cheap option, the premium choice, the fastest, or the specialist.
Two bakeries sit on the same street. One positions on low prices, selling a dozen cookies for $8. The other positions as a custom celebration bakery, with a dozen decorated cookies at $42 and a 10-day lead time. The second sells fewer units, perhaps 40 dozen a month instead of 200, but earns $1,680 versus $1,600, with far less production work.
Choose a position you can deliver consistently and then reflect it in your pricing, design, and customer experience.
Common mistakes
- !Trying to be cheapest, best, and fastest at once.
- !Letting the position drift so branding, pricing, and service no longer match.
