eBay US fees, most categories (checked Oct 2026)

  • Total sale = Item price + Shipping charged + Sales tax
  • Final value fee = Rate × min(Total sale, $7,500) + 2.35% × max(Total sale − $7,500, 0)
  • Per-order fee = $0.40, or $0.30 if Total sale ≤ $10
  • Profit = Item price + Shipping charged − Fees − Item cost − Actual shipping cost
  • Margin = Profit ÷ (Item price + Shipping charged) × 100

Why sales tax and shipping raise your eBay fee

eBay collects sales tax from the buyer and passes it to the state, so the tax never reaches you — yet the final value fee is still worked out on the total that includes it. The same goes for the shipping charge: if you charge $8 for shipping, eBay takes its percentage of that $8 too.

That is why sellers who compare the fee to the item price alone underestimate it. In the example below, fees come to 15% of the money the seller actually collects, not 13.6%.

Worked example: a thrifted jacket

A reseller sells a jacket for $60 and charges $8 shipping. The buyer's 6% sales tax adds $4.08, so the total amount of the sale is $72.08.

Final value fee = 13.6% × $72.08 = $9.80, plus the $0.40 per-order fee, for $10.20 in fees. The jacket cost $15 at a thrift store and the label cost $7.50. Profit = $68 − $10.20 − $15 − $7.50 = $35.30, a 51.9% margin on the $68 the seller collected.

Category rates that differ

Pick a category in the calculator to swap the default rate. A few that change the math noticeably:

  • Books, movies, music: 15.3% up to $7,500.
  • Guitars & basses: 6.7% up to $7,500, half the default rate.
  • Athletic sneakers: 8% and no per-order fee when the total sale is $150 or more; 13.6% below that.
  • Trading cards, comics and coins: 13.25% up to $7,500.
  • Jewelry (not watches): 15% up to $5,000, then 9% on the whole sale.

Optional costs are not included: Promoted Listings ad fees, listing upgrades, insertion fees after your 250 free listings ($0.35 each) and the 1.65% international fee when you ship abroad without eBay International Shipping.

How to keep more of each sale

  • Bundle items: the per-order fee is charged once per checkout, not per item.
  • Sell very cheap items as lots — even the smaller $0.30 per-order fee is a large slice of a $5 sale.
  • Keep your account Above Standard. Below Standard sellers are charged an additional 6% final value fee on their sales.
  • Weigh and measure before you list so the shipping you charge covers the label you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How much does eBay take from a sale?

For most categories, 13.6% of the total amount of the sale (item price, shipping charged and sales tax) up to $7,500, plus 2.35% of anything above that, plus $0.40 per order. Some categories, such as guitars and sneakers over $150, have lower rates.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale, which includes the shipping cost the buyer pays. If you offer free shipping, there is no shipping charge for the fee to apply to.

Does eBay take a fee on sales tax?

Yes. Sales tax is part of the total amount of the sale that eBay's final value fee is based on, even though eBay remits the tax itself.

What is the eBay per-order fee?

$0.40 for orders over $10 and $0.30 for orders of $10 or less. It is charged once per order, meaning everything one buyer checks out together with the same shipping method.

Are eBay fees different with a Store subscription?

Yes. Store subscribers have their own fee schedule, including more zero insertion fee listings. This calculator uses the standard no-Store rates; check eBay's Store selling fees page for your subscription level.
